If there is anything as magnificent as late October in southern Ohio, well, I don’t believe you.  The trees we are uniquely blessed with deposit amber and rust-colored leaves all over the perfectly formed hills that seem to go on and on.  The sky is unforgettably blue so blue in fact, my quick glance lingers into a trance-like gaze. I am careful to drink in its richness and mark its beauty upon my heart for I know what is sure to follow:  unwelcomed cold weather.

As the last days of October approach a certain urgency to get out and experience the last of fall has set up camp insisting on having it’s way in my world and most likely planning to get comfortable.  It’s always a disappointment when I finally drag myself away from the cares that keep me closed up in the house and out into the wild where the sounds of nature serve to entice my curiosity reminding me I should’ve have pulled away sooner and taken advantage.  Though the crackling of leaves underneath my walking boots obliges a calming rustic melody, my imagination burns to devise an imaginary scene that will no doubt beg to rival the reality calling me from home.  I know, I’m too old and responsible to be carried away whimsically like this.  It has always been my weakness to marvel and envisage and I have just discovered wooded hillsides and forests seem to provide a charismatic canvas for such behavior.

The little girl in me never dies apparently. I can remember as a child trekking all over the hillside behind my home.  I wasn’t big on baby dolls but the rocks, trees and that old worn out shack at the base of the hill near the creek were fascinating props that invited my thoughts to wander in a realm unaffected by modern conveniences that now prove to be a tremendous distraction and great opposition to thought.  Or maybe it’s the extra oxygen.  Either way, I love the woods and with each step I found myself deeper into the overgrowth and even more curious where my mind would take me.  Not forgetting my original cause for the fall excursion, I silenced my thoughts and began searching for some mushrooms even though I kow the season is less likely to yield anything edible.  I did find a few but nothing to write home about.  Thankfully my time in the woods did exact a bit of thankfulness for the convenience of grocery stores.  I’ve had a craving for mushroom bisque and if you’re a mushroom lover there is no comparison to this rich earthy creamy soup. The dimming daylight summoned closure and I made my way back to a roaring fire at home where a little warmth for the tummy and wisdom for the soul are perfect endings to an enchanted day.
